Voyamap does its work quietly, which also means it can be quiet about what it's doing. Here is how it works, what it needs from your device, and how to reach us when something looks wrong.

How capture works

Start a trip on your iPhone and Voyamap listens for the places you stop. It uses Apple's visit monitoring and significant-change location updates: the system wakes the app briefly when you arrive somewhere or leave, and the app writes down the stop. It never streams your position and never draws a continuous line of where you walked.

When you open the app, it matches the photos you took and the workouts you recorded to those stops, names each stop from nearby points of interest, and lays everything out on a timeline and a map. Short stops (a few minutes) can be missed — that is the price of not tracking you continuously. Add them by hand from the Timeline if they matter.

Permissions & battery

Why "Always" location?

Visit monitoring only works with Always access; with "While Using" the app cannot be woken while it is closed, so nothing is captured. Voyamap asks for "While Using" first and upgrades to "Always" only when you start a trip. You can check what it recorded at any time in the trip's Review tab.

Battery

Because the app relies on the system's own visit detection instead of GPS, the battery cost is small — comparable to the Weather app knowing your city. You will not see a persistent location arrow in the status bar.

Photos and Apple Health

Voyamap reads your photo library to attach pictures to stops and to rebuild past trips from photo locations; it reads workouts and routes from Apple Health to put walks, runs and rides on the map. It never writes to either, and none of it leaves your device.

Notifications

Two optional notifications exist: a reminder on the first morning of a trip you created in advance, and a quiet alert when you arrive at a notable place. Both can be switched off in Settings → Recording.

Reviewing stops

Voyamap suggests; you decide. Every stop can be confirmed, renamed, given another place, split, merged with its neighbour, or hidden. Photos that did not land on a stop wait in Review, grouped into moments you can assign in one go. Nearly every action has an Undo.

Trips from the past

On the Trips tab, tap + → Old Trip…. Give the dates and the destination's time zone, and Voyamap rebuilds the stops from the locations of your photos and the routes of your workouts, ready for review. Find my trips scans your library's dates and locations (never the images) and proposes the trips it spotted. This works on the Mac too.

Backup & restore

Settings → Back Up All Trips… writes everything Voyamap knows into one .voyamap file: stops, routes, notes, links, tags, attachments, covers, and the book and movie designs. Each trip's Overview has an "Export trip backup" for a single trip.

To restore, open the file from Files or Finder, share it to Voyamap, or use + → Import Backup… / Settings → Restore from Backup…. The import lists the trips in the file, skips the ones already in your library, and restores the rest. Photos and workouts come back as references and load from your Photos library and Apple Health, so keep those on the device too. To restore a trip over its current version, delete it first, then import the backup — everything comes back, photos included. A trip whose dates overlap one you already have is refused: two trips never share dates.

iPhone, iPad & Mac

Voyamap runs on iOS and iPadOS 17.4 or later and macOS 14.4 or later. Your trips sync through your own iCloud account; sign in on another device and they are simply there. Recording is an iPhone job — macOS cannot give an app background location — so the Mac is the companion for reviewing, editing, and making books and movies on a big screen. Only one device records at a time; Settings → Recording shows which.

Free & Pro

Voyamap is free to start and everything you capture stays yours. If Voyamap Pro is offered in your version, it unlocks extras such as book and movie export or rebuilding long past trips; capturing, reviewing and viewing your trips, backups and restore are never behind a purchase. Purchases go through Apple's In-App Purchase; Restore Purchases lives in Settings and on the purchase screen, and subscriptions are managed in your Apple Account settings.

Your data

Everything lives on your devices and in your private iCloud; there is no Voyamap account and no Voyamap server. Deleting a trip removes it everywhere. To erase all of it: delete the app, then remove its iCloud data under Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Voyamap. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.
